Brief Information About the School

Our fieldtrip on Thursday to the Alfred-Wegener-Schule in Kirchhain, a cooperative comprehensive school, started at 10 am and we were friendly welcomed by Mr. Schouler.
The Guidelines of the School are:
+      cooperation and communication-
friendly learning
           atmosphere free of anxiety
+      democratic and social
+      new learning methods and individual support
+      very good teaching skills
+      focus on musical and athlectic education

The school grounds are very big with more than 20 (!) different, numbered buildings, because it has been designed as a so called “garden school”. Mr. Schouler said that the rather open complex reduces violence and creates a friendly atmosphere among the students. Nevertheless, there have to be more supervisors and the way students and teachers have to walk to get from one class to another is quite long. There are 1800 students and 160 teachers learning and working at the school which is divided into the middle-school (Haupt-/Realschule) and the grammar school (Gymnasialzweig).

The impression I had regarding the buildings was rather normal. The old buildings did not look very impressive or nice and some of them are being renovated at the moment whereas the new building is friendly, modern, well-equipped and includes the canteen as well as the auditorium.

But let’s get into the topic and reflect what Mr. Schouler told us: I will first of all give an overview over what he showedand told us. I will reflect on these aspects afterwards before I will write about specific questions which have come up and been discussed throughout the field trip.
